Five Reasons Why You Should Vote

Everytime I'm with my friends I tend to be very vocal about my stance on politics. I would often tell them about how governance is like in the Philippines, just so they could get an idea of what it is like on the other side of the world. Elections probaby is  the most dangerous day especially for politicians and media men, and most people would just dismiss the importance of voting. I remember one of my friends said he has only voted once in his entire life because he doesn't really see its essence. He just minds his own business and carry on with life. This is not surprising as there will always be a part of the population who are indifferent about national issues. But ofcourse, like any other sane person, I persuaded him into voting; and today I'm also going to give you five reasons why you should exercise your right to vote.

1. It is your civic duty

As a citizen of your country, you have the social obligation to participate in the decision of how it is going to be governed. The very first step towards that is to vote for those who will best represent the quality of life you want to have. You are given this right, so don't waste it. In the past, women were not allowed to vote. Black people were not permitted as well. Can't you see this priviledge being given to you? Use your democracy wisely.

2. Make your voice be heard

Imagine not participating in elections, yet you complain about your government. Imagine paying taxes but not getting proper health care or even at the simplest, good public transportation. How can you stomach the fact the you are so frustrated in the current governance when you didn't even vote. You have a chance for your voice to be heard, and that is through voting.

3. It is your money (in taxes) and way of life in the line

I can't stress this enough. You are literally handing over your future to these people who will lead your nation. You have that one day to decide how life is going to be not only for you, but your entire community. Remember, you are paying  your government money (in taxes) so they could make life easier for you and your family -- access to proper health care, retirement, education, jobs, and more. Just this pandemic alone, try to reflect on how your government handled the situation. If you are okay about it, then good, you probably made the right decision last election. If you aren't, well you know the answer.

4. Failure of elections

If you think your vote is only a one small thing compared to millions of voters, well, guess what would happen if all those voters thought the same way as you did? Elections will fail. If you don't like any of your candidates, still show up, and vote to abstain. It is still participating in the elections. It's like telling your government that "Hey, I don't like any of these people so I'm not voting any of them". Instead of not showing up at all, that's like being silent without having a say in it. Remember point #2, make your voice be heard.

5. If you want change, your country depends on you

Every election is an opportunity for change. If you want to make a positive impact not only for you and your family but also for the entire community, then vote. Choose your candidates wisely, know where they stand on national issues and make sure they can represent you the best. If you want change, then you know what to do.

Before election day, make sure you are prepared.

  1. Register to vote,
  2. Find out where your polling place is,
  3. Research about the candidates and what they stand for,
  4. Make a list of your chosen ones,
  5. Cast your ballot

Remember, if for some reason you decide to sell your vote, you are just letting these politicians silence you. They will most likely be corrupt, and that small amount of money they gave you? They will take that back ten-fold in the taxes you will pay them in the future.

Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park

I've always wanted to visit this tourist attraction ever since I came to the island but never really got the chance to do so because I live on the other side. I'm not a green thumb or a plant/flower enthusiast but I love going to botanic parks because of a lot of prospective subject to practice my macro photography. It is also a nice place to unwind, have a quick stroll, and appreciate nature in its most natural form.

Last week, after so many self persuasions I finally decided to get up and get ready on a Saturday morning to go to North Side and enjoy Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park. It was very humid unfortunately so I ended up sweating all over throughout the walk. It was uncomfortable considering the amount of mosquitoes biting me as well, but nevertheless I enjoyed the view! Here are some of the photos I took.

Flowers always make people better, happier and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine for the soul.

Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park showcases beautiful gardens, lake, and nature displays. It is also a natural habitat for the Cayman Blue Iguana and a breeding ground for a variety of rare aquatic birds and animals native to the Caribbean. Click here to view the map.

Five things you probably didn't know about me

Happy Sunday everyone! Today I want you to get to know me a little bit better. I can be quite private in a way that I don't really like putting myself out there, but this time I'm going out of my shell for a bit and share some of myself. This is part of my Coffee & Connect series where I talk about personal stuff, so you can check out the other posts if you are curious. ☺

Let's begin!

#1. When asked, I always introduce myself as full Filipino

I was born and raised in the Philippines by my Filipino mom. Technically I am only 50%, but the way I think, speak, and act are all 100% Filipino. Even my accent would give me away. Nothing is really Caymanian of me except my appearance (sometimes). All values I have are embedded from the Filipino culture. I am even more updated in the Philippine politics than in Cayman.

#2. I was a Sasaeng

For those who are not familiar with the term, a sasaeng is an obsessive fan who stalks, or engages in other behaviour constituting an invasion of the privacy of a Korean idol or other public figure. I was so addicted  to Kpop to the point that it has taken over my both my consious and unconcious life. I used to stalk my idols and live like they know me and that I'm a part of their life as well. It almost felt like living in my own bubble. I used to always follow my idols around in person and online back when Kpop wasn't mainstream. I always go with my bestfriend Hazel who share the same sentiments as me. There was a time we faked backstage passes (as audio technical people), even in the airport pretending to assist a relative coming from abroad so we could  go in VIP  (please do not do this lol) , slept in a hotel bathroom because where the idols are staying is fully booked, and stalking them all day and skipping classes just so we could get their attention. Not very proud of this experience but I was very young back then. If you are curious about this part of my life I can share some experiences and photos in the next Coffee and Connect.

#3.  I love to laugh. It is my hobby.

I don't know maybe it is my way of escape from all the negativities in life. I like watching comedy series and movies because I love to get myself a good laugh. I watch comical youtube videos for that same reason, and I like laughing at my friends' jokes even  though they're not funny (sorry! also for moral support lol). Conversely, one of the reasons also is I could get emotional very quickly and could cry in a snap. I am a very emotional person and this is what I've been working on the past couple of years. I try to avoid situations that would trigger a breakdown. I remember joining a theatre play a while back about suicide prevention and I was surprised to see the audience cry as they saw my performance. They probably felt it was more than just a role. Never did that again because it took me quite some time to recover!

#4. Contrary to popular belief, I am an introvert with social anxiety.

I talk to myself in the mirror and record myself talking just so I could hear my own thoughts and practice my communicaton skills. Even in Tagalog, it's hard for me to convey what I want to say. I don't understand how come it's clear in my head but when I speak it's not as layed out as I want it to be? In short I am not articulate enough, that's why I always prefer writing than speaking.

#5. If you see me in person, trust me, I always look like I'm lost.

But I'm not! Everytime I go out, I never check my surroundings out. I am most of the time just in my own world. If you know what I mean. This is why my friends would always tell me I always look lost and gullible. And some would be like "Hey I saw you but you snobbed me" No sorry! I really don't mind other people's business when I'm out. I just go do my agenda on my own and that's it. I love being alone especially in public places, it gives me that weird comfortable feeling of being in my own personal space while my surroundings are busy. It's like the calm in the middle of the storm.

I hope you got to know me a little bit better. Have a great week you guys! 😘

Discover Cayman

Discover Camana Bay

As mentioned in my previous blog post, I recently got a job at my dream company, a Swiss bank. It is located at one of Grand Cayman's hot spots for tourists, Camana Bay. I remember my first visit there as a tourist, it almost felt like I'm back in Bonifacio Global City. The location is very aesthetic and it houses almost every essential establishment you could think of. There is a bookstore, numerous restaurants and cafe's, clinics, cinema for leisure, mini gardens for picnic, and ofcourse the Fosters (the grocery store) is just a few steps away.

Definitely, having your workplace there is such a privilege. The entire location has state of the art facilities especially the security and data centre. Most companies there are wealth management / investments banks and audit firms. I remember my previous co-workers aspiring to work there as well.

Now my mom, upon knowing my transfer, is very excited and curious as to how working there is like. She would always ask me to send her photos so she would feel like she is also there with me. And so I decided to tag you along with my virtual tour and hope you enjoy some photos of my super cozy and aesthetic work location!

Bus access is not a problem too as there is a walkway going to the main road for commuters like me. I would always get a little bit of grocery here and there before going home and it is such a convenience, I don't have to waste another CI$ 4 just for transportation alone lol.  It's also a nice place to hangout with friends especially in the night. The lights are scenic.

I am beyond blessed and thankful to be given the opportunity to work at such an amazing place :)
